Those who bring sunshine into the lives of others cannot keep it from themselves.

Make Someone Happy
We want to dedicate a new section of SunShow to highlight everyday heroism, individual acts of kindness and inspiring personal stories.
Our first guests for this feature are Gina, Lisa and Michael from Make Someone Happy. Make Someone Happy is a movement created by the trio to inspire others to spread joy and kindness. Small acts of kindness can have a profound impact, so we think it’s amazing that the trio has started the movement.
Read on for our interview with Make Someone Happy, and please follow them on Instagram here.
Q: What inspired you to start Make Someone Happy?
A: Our Dad, Carmine, who passed in 2017 inspired us to start our company. He was a WWII veteran who loved to make people happy in his unique ways: by telling a corny joke, singing a song, or giving someone a bag of potato chips to make them smile.
His motto was to Make Someone Happy and we want to continue his legacy of sparking joy through simple acts of kindness. His story embodies our message and he naturally became the identity of our brand.
Q: What’s your favorite thing that you've done so far as part of Make Someone Happy?
A: We donated cookies, stickers and buttons to health care workers at Kent Hospital in Rhode Island during the pandemic to boost morale and show appreciation.
Q: How do you think people can add a little bit more brightness to their day?
A: When we help someone, we can brighten our own day as well as theirs. Small acts of kindness such as smiling instead of frowning or asking a less fortunate neighbor if they need anything are important to show others you care.
It’s the small things that matter. We hope that the positive story of how Carmine lived his life every day will inspire others to do the same.
Q: What are your goals for Make Someone Happy in the future?
A: We want to spread our message as much as possible and would like to align with other brands to accomplish this together. We have a children’s book in progress and we hope to inspire the youngest generation to choose kindness and encourage strong values.
We’re introducing products this month with the Carmine logo that we hope will remind people to share a smile, be a little kinder, and show empathy towards others. We donate a percentage of our sales to charities.
Q: Is there anything else you would like to add?
A: In a world full of hurt and sorrow we want to inspire the realization in everyone that they can be a bright light and a positive force for their own lives and for others.
The Highway of Green
The Beltway Expressway in Mexico City is unique: instead of concrete highway pillars, the highway is filled with vertical gardens, or lush columns of green. These pillars are a part of Mexico City’s new “Via Verde” project and are used to create lush vertical gardens filled with vibrant plants.
How? The vertical gardens were funded both by private donors and the Mexico City government in collaboration with the workshop Verde Vertical. The gardens are supported on metal frames wrapped around the highway pillars. An automated rain collection system ensures the plants are being watered and are growing properly. And because the plants are being grown from a hydroponic textile instead of soil, their weight doesn’t overbear the pillars.
Impact: For the residents of Mexico City, the pillared gardens will act as green lungs that beautify the concrete cityscape, produce clean oxygen, soak up carbon dioxide, and even absorb traffic noise.
Recycling Food, Plastic, and Lives
These two San Francisco based companies, RecycleForce and Brightmark, are putting a new spin on recycling. In their joint-venture, not only do they recycle food, plastic, and electronic waste, but they also help recycle the lives of former convicts by helping them transition back to society.
Background: Many former convicts have difficulties finding work and being accepted in their new environments. Because of these challenges, former prisoners who want to better themselves become more likely to return to their old lives. RecycleForce and Brightmark jump in here by providing former convicts with training, housing, and jobs.
Numbers: Thanks to RecycleForce and Brightmark’s efforts, only 23% of those in their programs go on to reoffend, significantly lower than the national 68%. Over the past two years, Brightmark has tripled its number of employees, recycle millions of tons of plastic, and helped many former convicts as well!
